Overdose Statistics

Opioids & Benzodiazepines
  • The number of drug overdose deaths increased by nearly 5% from 2018 to 2019
  • Per the CDC in 2019, 70,630 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States. Over 70% of those deaths involved opioids.
  • From 1999-2019, nearly 500,000 people died from an overdose involving any opioid, including prescription and illicit opioids.
  • 16% of overdose deaths involving opioids also involved benzodiazepines.
  • From April-June 2019 to April-June 2020, prescription and illicit benzodiazepines involved overdose deaths increased 21.8% and 519.6% respectively.
